SCBA/SEARCH & RESCUE MOBILE UNIT

The training in this trailer will involve SCBA, Search & Rescue, and Smoke Diving inside the SCBA Unit. This Unit is specifically for firefighter training. The training can be done many different ways but 2 of the most common are: blind sweep rescue /exit, and smoke training. Blind sweep rescue involves SCBA training through the dark trailer with no flashlights. Smoke training is done with flashlights but the trailer is filled with smoke. The trailer is a long dark maze that simulates: rafters in a house, hidden door ways, tight turns, wire entanglement, confined spaces, and steep slope maneuvers. It also has many dead ends. If you would like to know more information about the SCBA training unit please contact the

Fire Prevention

The South Pittsburg Fire Department is proud to take part in National Fire prevention week, however the schools were on break during that week. We decided to go to SPES the week after. All the students loved getting in the fire truck, and learned a lot. Four of our firemen visited the school and had a great time. Here are a few pictures.

The TAG Burn began in 1981 with a small town training burn of 2 houses. Since South Pittsburg was not a big department, they decided to invite the Jasper fire department. After a day or so of planning for the burn, the city then donated a few more houses to burn and by the end of the week there were about 18  to 19 houses and buildings for training and burning. To begin with this was a problem because South Pittsburg wanted this burn to be more of a classroom setting to get the strategies and tactics of basic Firefighting, but because of the large # of houses that needed to be cleared the department didn't want them to go to waist so they called hundreds of departments in the Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia areas. The initial plan was to start in a small training room and then go out to the burn. This was a problem because the room was about 15 feet by 15 feet. The South Pittsburg officers decided to then make this room the command center and begin the class at the South Pittsburg High School. Finally it was the big day. On Saturday fire trucks from around the three states started rolling in to the small town of South Pittsburg. This was a unbelievable sight for many South Pittsburg natives when they would pass by the school and see fire trucks packed on to a field beside the school. There were about 30-40 fire trucks and pumpers and anywhere from 150-200 firemen ready for the training burns. The burns lasted all day Saturday and Sunday. The famous Training burn in South Pittsburg was finally named Operation TAG Burn, because it involved fire departments from Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia = TAG.
